“We hope you all enjoyed the fashion segment,” Shanelle said into the mic, addressing the crowd after the awesome display of designer creations. “Bidding for the silent auction will start shortly. Right now, we’ll have a brief intermission before we begin our Date Night auction. Please feel free to refill your drinks at the bar or catch members of our wait staff as they go by, and don’t forget to ask them about the delicious hors d’oeuvres, as well. For your listening pleasure during the intermission, we have a special guest who was also one of the lovely models for tonight’s event. Ladies and gentlemen, please give a round of applause for the phenomenal Miss Melody King.”

The audience clapped loudly as I sat transfixed on her.

She stood on the stage with nothing but a microphone in front of her.

Completely spellbound, I watched as she started off her set with her version of Ledisi’s “Alright”. I was blown away when she switched it up and performed the 70’s jam “Tell Me Something Good”. And I was turned the hell on when she gave a sultry rendition of Jill Scott’s “Come See Me”.

As she performed that last song, our eyes locked for a minute, and I was willing to bet my soul she was singing it to me. I’m sure others felt the same as she glanced over the crowd during her performance.

She was a natural. She sang as if she’d been born with a microphone in her hand. She was confident; she looked relaxed. She looked sexy as hell, and the image of her on that stage had been burned into my mind.

I figured she was a pretty good musician by the way she tinkered around with Lyric’s keyboard, but I really had no idea how talented she was. In a matter of minutes, I had become her biggest fan.

The “playboi” in me now yearned to know what she sounded like when she moaned.

I shook my head at myself. She was making it harder for me to want to remain platonic with her.

“She’s so good!” Lyric chimed in after the set ended. “I didn’t know she could sing like that!”

“Neither did I,” I replied, still in awe.

“Your neighbor there has a nice set of pipes on her,” JB said, smirking at my expression.

“Why didn’t you tell me that she was performing?” I asked.

“Hell, I didn’t know until yesterday,” she answered. “Nelle handled all of that.”

“Nelle handled all of what?”

I looked up as Shanelle approached the table.

“The entertainment,” JB answered before meeting her halfway for a quick kiss.

“Oh,” she answered before turning her gaze towards me. “So, um…somebody has been holding out.”

“It’s not like that, sis-”

“Don’t ‘sis’ me,” Shanelle interrupted. “It’s exactly like that, but I’ll tell you off later. For now, introductions please.”

I shook my head in chagrin and amusement before speaking again. “Shanelle, this is my daughter, Lyric. Lyric, this is-”

“Your auntie Nelle!” Shanelle jumped in excitedly, reaching out and pulling Lyric in for a big hug. “You
